Greta Krumina is a twenty-one year old student who has called Ireland her home for the last fourteen years, she also happens to be my bestfriend. Greta is originally from Latvia. A small town known as Ventspils was her home for the first seven years. Greta’s mum Vineta moved to Ireland for a fresh start for herself and Greta. Twelve months later Greta moved to Ireland, where she lived with her mum and stepdad. They lived in Drogheda for a year before moving to Dundalk. To Greta Drogheda was like New York to her, full of adventure and a chance for a brand new life with her family. When Greta speaks about her transition to Ireland, it is filled with happy memories, a little anxiety but mostly happy memories. Everyone she met was open and welcoming, which made Greta feel at ease with her new life. When asking Greta what was the most difficult part of moving, she admits it was the language barrier, at seven years old Greta had no English yet, she adjusted to her new life quite quickly and before she knew it she became fluent in English. When I asked Greta what was the strangest thing about Ireland her response was “people putting milk in their tea, I found that so bizarre. Back home we drink herbal tea such as mint or berries so when I saw people putting milk in their tea it was quite a shock. I quickly got use to it and now I love milk in my tea.” Greta says moving to Ireland was the best thing that ever happened to her. She now has a life full of endless opportunities. As someone who has called Ireland home since day one, it makes me extremely proud to know that Ireland can be a great new start at life for anybody who wants to call Ireland their home.☘
